March Designer Dish: Simple Spring Spruce-ups

March 5th, 2009

Spring is in full force and Adrian has pulled together a few great ways to update your walls for spring with a mix of soothing and playful tones. *Please note images of paint colors may not appear true to color on your screen.

With a craving for simplicity, our favorite green at present is Hearts of Palm by Sherwin Williams, which resembles a mix of celery and avocado.  A combination of both warm and cool tones, green evokes a calm sensation, and is the only color our eyes perceive as neutral.  With Hearts of Palm  as your wall color, intermingle  hints of aqua and eggplant in your decor for an intriguing spring palette.

Pale pinks are very much “in” this season.  Paired with white trim and pale grays or espresso accents (in ceiling color, window treatments or pillows), this palette oozes tranquil ambiance. Our picks above are Barbados and Quill by Sherwin-Williams. Pink is the only tint that has the opposite emotional effect of its mother color (red). The color pink is a natural stress reducer whereas red, a very active color, evokes agitation and anxiety.

For a more playful approach to your walls, go for orange/tangerine tones.  Perfect for a punch of color in any room.  Transform this typically associated “fall” color to a vibrant spring hue by pairing it with watery blue-greens.  Sherwin Williams Rhett Pumpkin is a nice choice.

Wallpaper is another very attractive way to enliven your walls.  As it tends to be an expensive up-fit, choose creative ways incorporate it.  You can paper various spaces…an accent wall, ceiling, beneath your chair rail, behind bookshelves, in a series of large frames or even a closet door.  A recent find, we adore this Willow Garden wallpaper by Cole & Son.

Bring your walls to life with these original pop art oil paintings.  Hang this on its own in a large frame for $300 or less, or try a series of three in smaller frames while still spending less than what you typically would in a gallery for original oil painting.

Another fashionable idea for interesting art is vintage posters or magazine covers like these vintage Vogue covers we found on Oh Joy!.

I love these vintage Vogue covers! What a great idea and so interesting to look at.

  • catherine gamble said,

Hi, i was just wondering what the name of the artist is who drew the vintage vogue magazine covers. This would help me out a lot as i would like to use the artists work as research for my A level art project.

    Thanks for your time,
    Catherine Gamble
