October Designer Dish: Does Size Really Matter?

October 15th, 2009

So you have a small space…that doesn’t mean it can’t be just as fantastic as a larger one. With the right tricks of the trade, you’ll be able to maximize your small space so it appears larger and is more functional. Here’s a few insider insights from Adrian…

[Furniture Selection]

-Incorporate smaller, more streamlined furniture pieces with exposed legs vs. larger or skirted pieces to open the room.

-Opt for tuxedo-style or armless upholstery over a rounded arm to keep your eye moving in a linear perspective.

-Be cautious not to put more than one large furniture piece on one particular wall to maintain balance.

- Lucite and glass occasional pieces (side tables, coffee tables, etc) keep the room open and allow for a transparency & function

[Think Horizontally]

- In thise case, horizontal stripes are welcomed.  Use these to widen a room.

[Windows]

- Install wider drapery rods as high as the ceiling to elongate the window both vertically & horizontally to make windows seem larger.

[Artwork]

- Small pieces of art in a grouping or series breaks up a space. Vary horizontal and vertical lines with art to create a maze-like path for the eye through the negative wall space to add interest.

[ De-Clutter]

- It almost goes without saying when dealing with a small space, but toss the clutter and opt for chic storage options such as unobtrusive shelving and storage ottomans.
